Melbourne Silicon Beach Meetup

By Advice for Businesses No Comments

As supporters of Melbourne’s Startup community we attended the July Melbourne Silicon Beach Meetup. Our role is to ensure that startups receive the right marketing advice so they can make the informed decisions on how best to achieve their business outcomes.

Unfortunately over 80% of startups do not survive after the first twelve months. The lack of a suitable marketing approach, though a failure to understand market trends, customer demographics and the competitive landscapes, is one of the top ten reasons for this failure.

Our mission of re-defining marketing as a strategic led approach that links business goals and marketing outcomes, means we are working with startups to ensure they receive the right marketing advice.

BNI is a weekly business networking group that encourages cross-referrals and reciprocal relationships. This morning I attended the BNI Melbourne Corporate Connections, which meets at the Park Hyatt Hotel.

There are many BNI Chapters across Melbourne, with each catering to the needs of their local members. The Corporate Connections Chapter seems to have a particular focus on professional services and we look forward to ongoing collaboration.

Twentieth Man Fund Fundraising Breakfast with Russel Howcroft

By Advice for Not-for-profit Organisations and Charities No Comments

The 20th Man Fund exists to alleviate poverty and to provide positive opportunities for disconnected youth. Since its beginnings in Melbourne’s Western suburbs, the Fund has grown to provide services across Melbourne and Victoria.

The 20th Man Fund was created by youth worker Les Twentyman, who through his career, saw firsthand the effects of disconnection and isolation within young people.  Over twenty years later the 20th Man Fund has grown to provide a range of services, including crisis accommodation, support services and leadership development.

This morning we attended a fundraising breakfast, which featured former advertising executive Russel Howcroft. While Russel is known for his appearance as a panelist on the Gruen Transfer, the breakfast provided an opportunity to learn more about his life prior to his career in advertising. Russel discussed his childhood and work history, which then developed into a passion for advertising and his subsequent involvement at Channel 10.

The 20th Man Fund is an example of a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to its mission in creating opportunities for young people. For further information please visit www.20thman.com.au

Slush Down Under 2015

By Advice for Businesses No Comments

SLUSH Down Under aims to connect technology entrepreneurs with investors so they can realise their vision.  As sponsors of Melbourne Silicon Beach we were invited to the conference and after party, where we had a chance to meet people active in the Startup space.

The key challenges for startups, includes the need to attract investment and commercialise their ideas. A great idea is often not enough, there is a need to develop business and marketing plans to provide the foundations for a viable business model.

Our involvement with Melbourne Silicon Beach enables us to work with the Startup community to develop these foundations. Marketing should be supporting the next wave of innovation to ensure that great ideas reach their full market potential.

TweetChat – #StartupChat Melbourne Silicon Beach vs LA

By Advice for Businesses No Comments

As sponsors of Melbourne Silicon Beach, we participated in a TweetChat involving Melbourne’s StartUp community and LA.  The conversation explored the role of StartUps in both locations and the key challenges faced by these communities. TweetChats provide an opportunity to converse over Twitter, discussing topics and connecting people who may otherwise never have interacted. Given that the concept of StartUps in Australia is relatively new, there is the potential for collaboration with the establish LA StartUp Community to share knowledge and build capacity.

The TweetChat pitted Melbourne against LA to see who could generate the most conversation. Despite Melbourne Silicon Beach being relatively new to #StartUpChat, we’re pleased to say that we beat LA in the first round!
