The 20th Man Fund exists to alleviate poverty and to provide positive opportunities for disconnected youth. Since its beginnings in Melbourne’s Western suburbs, the Fund has grown to provide services across Melbourne and Victoria.

The 20th Man Fund was created by youth worker Les Twentyman, who through his career, saw firsthand the effects of disconnection and isolation within young people.  Over twenty years later the 20th Man Fund has grown to provide a range of services, including crisis accommodation, support services and leadership development.

This morning we attended a fundraising breakfast, which featured former advertising executive Russel Howcroft. While Russel is known for his appearance as a panelist on the Gruen Transfer, the breakfast provided an opportunity to learn more about his life prior to his career in advertising. Russel discussed his childhood and work history, which then developed into a passion for advertising and his subsequent involvement at Channel 10.

Schooldays Magazine is a publication providing educational insights for parents and teachers. I was recently invited to share our expertise in fundraising and how there is a need to adopt a strategic approach to raising funds.

Fundraising is an ongoing issue for schools, as well as not-for-profit organisations. There is a need to plan fundraising projects so you can achieve the targets that have been established. 5000 Poppies to 100,000 – Crowdfunding Australia’s largest community arts tribute

In 2013 a grassroots campaign was started to hand make 5000 poppies. By 2015 over 100,000 poppies have been created across Australia.

We’re supporting 5000 poppies, and asking the community to help crowdfund Australia’s largest community based tribute of respect and remembrance.

5000 poppies was created by local artists Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight, whose fathers had fought in WWII. Community interest, from individuals and groups such as the Country Women’s Association, RSLs, schools and libraries, has seen thousands of contributors donate their time.

The intent is to unveil the poppies at Federation Square this ANZAC Day to ensure that the tributes can be properly acknowledged. Funding is required for event management and regulatory compliance and a budget of $50,000 is required to meet these needs.

5000 Poppies is Australia’s largest community arts project and we are pleased to be able to support this tribute. To assist in the fundraising campaign we produced a video outlining the aims of the project and how people can get involved.

The National Conference on Volunteering is a peak annual event for volunteer involving organisations across Australia. The event was organised by Volunteering Australia and hosted by Volunteering SA&NT.

The Conference had four key themes:

  • Lead – to encourage inspirational leadership
  • Partner – collaboration to achieve results
  • Build – creating innovation
  • Sustain – strengthening foundations

During the conference I co-presented a presentation with Julie Pettett, the CEO Of Volunteering Western Victoria. Putting Research into Practice – the Marketing and Rebranding of Wimmera Volunteers. The presentation discussed the importance of marketing and the experiences of Volunteering Western Victoria in re-engaging with its communities.

Volunteering Western Victoria, was formerly known as Wimmera Volunteers and had remained a static organisation, despite the changing nature of volunteering. There was a need to re-engage the community and to broaden its presence outside of Horsham in Western Victoria.

Syneka Marketing assisted Volunteering Western Victoria by developing a marketing plan that identified a future direction for the organisation. The marketing plan identified four goals supported in the businesses plan:

  • Be an effective peak organisation
  • Grow access to resources
  • Build capacity in the volunteer and community sector
  • Organisation development

These goals were supported by two further priorities identified in the marketing plan:

  • Diversify and Sustain Funding Support
  • Rebrand Wimmera Volunteers

A business plan identifies what an organisation wants to achieve and a marketing plan looks how to achieve this vision.  A marketing plan then considers the key messages and marketing tools that can reach the required stakeholders.

Diversifying income became a priority, due to the need to decrease dependence on government revenue.  The marketing plan identified business partnerships, the introduction of membership, fundraising and philanthropic programs that could add new income sources. These strategies supported the business plan, with membership complementing the desire to be a peak organisation and partnerships, enabling the development of new programs.

The rebranding of Wimmera Volunteers arose due to the need to position the organisation as a peak body and to re-engage with its community.  A new name, visual identity, logo and marketing materials were developed in six weeks, to launch the new brand at the 2012 Annual General Meeting.

The name Volunteering Western Victoria was selected, since it clearly defined the purpose of the organisation and the role it has in supporting volunteering across Western Victoria.  The tagline  Empowering Communities, Supporting Volunteers, reinforced the impact that the organisation has a local and individual level.

Not-for-profit organisations have limited marketing budgets and a result names should be clearly identifiable to avoid the need to explain the purpose of the organisation.

Marketing within not-for-profit organisations requires the ability to reach numerous stakeholders. There is a need for marketing messages that provide a consistent narrative, while being tailored to the needs of individual stakeholders. A not-for-profit organisation needs to not only reach its clients, but also government, business partners, volunteers, other organisations, board members and internal staff.

The aim of the rebrand was to utilise the new name and tagline, as well as modernising the image of the organisation. The rebranding was accompanied by the design of new marketing materials, including brochures, factsheets, posters and website.

The presentation was extremely well received and I would like to thank the many attendees for their interest in the journey undertaken by Volunteering Western Victoria.

Successfully Planning and Promoting Events – Training Workshop

Eastern Volunteers is a volunteer resource centre located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, which assists community organisations in recruiting and training volunteers.

This month I conducted a training session on planning and promoting events; following the success of a similar workshop that I held last year. The half-day workshop covered the following topics:

Developing a marketing approach

Events are a marketing activity and as such they need to align with organisational goals. All forms of interaction, such as attending an event, receiving promotional materials or customer service, results in an impression being formed. It is imperative that these impressions reinforce the key messages that an organisation wishes to communicate.

Events need a clearly defined purpose so that the organisation and participants are aware of the outcomes they wish to be achieve. Clear expectations also assist when evaluating the effectiveness of an event.

Do you wish to raise funds, or are you planning to raise awareness for your organisation? While there may be a crossover between purposes, there will typically be an overriding priority that defines the aim of the event.

Like any form of marketing, there is a need to understand the target market for your event. Who do you wish to attract to the event and why is it is important to reach this target market? Knowing the target market will assist in understanding the best communication tools that can be used to reach these attendees.
