Afghan Treasures Exhibit With Amnesty International

At the Afghan Gallery

On the 20th July I attended the Afghan Treasures exhibit at the Melbourne Museum, with the Amnesty International Melbourne Metro Group.

During the first half of 2013, I served as the Events Manager of this group. One of the things that I strive for when I plan events is to do something, that is innovative, dynamic and out of the box.

For the first half of the year, the Melbourne Metro Group was focusing on a campaign to improve conditions for women living in Afghanistan.

At this time the Melbourne Museum was holding an exhibit that showcased the rich and diverse history of Afghanistan.

The Melbourne Metro Group agreed that going to this exhibit would be a great way to learn about Afghani culture, gain some insight into the history of Afghanistan and see how recent events have changed the country, especially for the women of Afghanistan.

I planned this event as an informal gathering.

The exhibit showcased a history that I personally was not aware of. Afghanistan was an integral part of the silk road, and has been influenced by a diverse range of cultures and customs from both, Asia and Europe.

The Afghan treasures themselves, were hidden for many years during the latter part of the 20th Century, as the county experienced various conflicts.

It was amazing to see how the people of Afghanistan protected these treasures, and have provided the opportunity for them to be appreciated by a world wide audience.

After the exhibit, we rounded off the event by eating at an Afghan restaurant, the Afghan Gallery, in Brunswick.

The event was very enjoyable and provided us with insights into the history and culture of Afghanistan. It also gave us an appreciation of how much needs to be done to protect the rights of the women living in this amazing country.

I look forward to setting the direction for future Melbourne Metro Group events, as the Co-Convener of the group.
